HAVANA 500: Excelencias Award for Bodeguita del Medio

By Caribbean Insider

Havana is a charming city, capable of captivating the traveler that enters that part of the historic center surrounded by the Malecon, a spacious bench splashed with sparkling waves from the Bay of Havana, where the sea breeze clears the hair and the smell of saltpeter seasons the lips.

Lovers and those who walk to the "hunt" of the most emblematic of this Cuban city sit there. When getting dark the fishermen hold their fishing rods with the intention of catching some fish.

It's a recurring image that adorns the environment, just like the musicians who rip their guitars and sing with a deep voice, while sellers of toasted peanuts, flowers or souvenirs make their proposals.

Visiting Havana is an adventure full of surprises, because every stone of its buildings, whether of architecture eclectic, baroque, neoclassical or any other type, have witnessed many historical events.

Such is the case of the Castle of the Three Kings of the Morro and the Fortress San Carlos de La Cabaña, where every night is held the so-called Cannonazo de las Nueve, to keep alive a tradition that

arose when the village was within the city walls and at that time the gunshot to alert that the access doors had to be closed with the purpose of protecting its inhabitants from corsairs, pirates and evildoers.

The city, whose historic center was declared by UNESCO in 1982 World Heritage and that in 2019 celebrates its 500 years, keeps its noisy rhythm, its busy pace, the charm of the streets and other populous places, the fresh air of the Malecon, the joy of  his people, the contagious rhythm of its music.

And among its many places with magic is the Bodeguita del Medio, which won the Excelencias Award for these days. It has a bar-restaurant that offers its distinctive drink, the mojito, made from mint, soda and Havana Club rum.

Human warmth, accentuated by the Caribbean sun, that's what you can feel in this cosmopolitan city, that will have to be crossed to know its Square of the Revolution, Fifth Avenue, La Rampa in the neighborhood of El Vedado, its hotels, its Rum Museum, the 88 monuments that it treasures with a great architectural value.

Main tourist destination of the city, it is shown as a lady that invites to be visited in order to show its charms.
