Spanish president visits Cuba

The President of the Government of the Kingdom of Spain, Pedro Sanchez Perez Castejon, will arrive in Havana this afternoon on an official visit and will hold official talks with Cuban authorities, reported a note from the Foreign Ministry of the Caribbean island.

Sanchez Perez Castejon is the third president of the Iberian nation to make an official visit to Cuba. Adolfo Suarez (1978) and Felipe Gonzalez (1986) did so before, because although Jose Aznar was in the Cuban capital in 1999 was to attend an Ibero-American Summit.

It is expected to participate in a business summit with the participation of around 300 Spanish businessmen who have businesses in the region, some of which are located in Cuban territory and others will be part of the government delegation.

Spain is the country with the most branches and mixed companies in Cuba and its third trading partner, with an exchange of 1.3 billion in 2016, only after China and Venezuela.

The president's agenda includes a tour of Old Havana, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982, and will pay tribute to Jose Marti in the Memorial that bears his name in the Cuban capital.

Cuba and Spain maintain diplomatic relations permanently since 1902, and are joined by strong historical and cultural ties.

The visit of Pedro Sanchez, invited by Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, reaffirms the willingness of both governments to promote political talks and the institutional links that support the cooperation, financial and investment relations between the two countries.
