Important Contribution of Tourism to Costa Rica GDP

Tourism has a significant contribution of 6.3 % to the Costa Rica Gross Domestic Product (GDP), showed the research conducted by the Central Bank of that Central American Nation with the collaboration of the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (CTI).

The research highlights  that the aforementioned 6.3 percent is equivalent to nearly 2 billion Colons, close to 3,3 billion dollars.

Eduardo Prado, general manager of the Central Bank acknowledge that tourism Satellite Account allows measuring the smoke-free industry contribution to the national production and the service it provides to national and foreigners and give the possibility to quantify contribution of foreigners who travel with tourism purposes, as well as Costa Ricans.

  The aforementioned research means that the leisure industry in Costa Rica uses moer than 211,000 people equivalent to 8.8 percent of those recorded in 2016, while 59 percent of the expenditures made by vacationers correspond to the tourism offered by issuing market; 17 % is national and other countries tourism and 24 %  for residents.

  Maria Amalia Revelo, head of the CTI noted that from 2000 the construction of the indicator to give accurate information on tourism began.

Having the satellite account allows us to be clear about the different aspects that make up this contribution to the national economy, the contribution to employment, as well as the data that will allow us to make decisions at public and private level,' she emphasized.

Tourism activities in the Central American country are headed by Accommodation, with 20.9 per cent, followed by Food and Beverages (20.5), Other Industries (16.6), Road Transport (12), Medical Care (10.4), Artistic Activities (6.6), Travel Agencies (5.0), Car Rental (4.4) and Air Transport (3.6).
