A project conducted by Lucio Costa, Chief of a team composed of Oscar Niemeyer, Carlos Leão, Jorge Moreira, Alfonso Eduardo Reidy and Ernani Vasconcellos, supervised by Le Corbusier between 1936 and 1946. This was the world’s first skyscraper in keeping with the architectural principles laid out by Le Corbusier. It sports interesting tile murals by Portinari –the same author of the paintings that decorate the first floor. Important sculptures by Celso Antônio are lined up along the staircases; by Lipschitz in the external walls of the auditorium, and by Alfredo Ceschiatti in the gardens designed by Roberto Burle Marx.
