1502-1814. In 1502, the island was discovered by Christopher Columbus and it became a British colony in 1639. The French seized the island in 1642, an event that sparked off a 150-year dispute with the British. This situation led to 14 changes of the St. Lucia’s flag. The island went back into British hands in 1814.
