Puntualizó que el Grupo Excelencias otorga desde hace 8 años en Cuba este reconocimiento, el cual fue otorgado en esta ocasión a 33 personalidades y proyectos excepcionales cuando se cumplen 500 años de la fundación de La Habana y 100 del natalicio de  Benny Moré, el Bárbaro del Ritmo.

La solidaridad con los afectados por el tornado que azotó a 4 municipios de la capital cubana se hizo presente cuando José Carlos de Santiago entregó 5 mil 500 dólares al gobierno de La Habana como contribución para paliar los daños de ese fenómeno que devastó viviendas, centros laborales y estudiantiles.

Muy singular resultó la jornada de premiación, con detalles novedosos como  la representación a la entrada del teatro de las estatuas vivientes de La Giraldilla y El Caballero de París, personajes emblemáticos de la ciudad, quienes dieron la bienvenida a los asistentes.

Igual resultó muy atractivo el performance de bailarines de Danza Contemporánea y la música de Alejandro Falcón al piano, así como la presencia de cadetes vestidos con uniformes de soldados españoles a la usanza de otros siglos, cuando la capital cubana cerraba sus murallas mediante el cañonazo de las nueve, una tradición aún vigente y que se pudo visualizar en un video en la sala Covarrubias.

La gala homenaje contó con las presentaciones del Septeto Santiaguero, la orquesta Sinfónica Nacional, Beatriz Márquez, Niurka Reyes y Alcibiades Durruthy, recordando a Benny Moré, y el cierre constituyó un derroche de tradición y cubanía con el Conjunto Folclórico Nacional representando su pieza Carnavaleando.
