From 1957 on, the number of Catholic worshipers has dipped from 70% to almost 40% of the total population. Roughly 50% of all Cubans say to be worshipers of any creed; 6% are atheist, 3,5% are Protestant and 1,5% practice African-Cuban religious beliefs, known here as santería.
