Puerto Rico: a chromatic route through the best sunsets of the island

In this life there are two types of tourists: those who keep souvenirs of their trips and those who do not. Some opt for fridge magnets of the countries they have visited, others prefer to collect postcards, and there are those who go further and decide to capture photos of the best sunsets they have witnessed. With the latter kind of traveler in mind, Discover Puerto Rico, the island's Destination Marketing Organization, has selected the most extraordinary places to contemplate live and direct the color "Puerto Rico Sunshine," a flamboyant shade of orange created by the Pantone Color Institute, which is so characteristic of its sunsets.
Cabo Rojo

Southwest of Puerto Rico, on the Los Morrillos Peninsula, is a lighthouse surrounded by limestone cliffs, mangroves and salt marshes, offering breathtaking views of the Cabo Rojo Nature Reserve. It was the second on the island designed by the Spaniards and it took six years to complete its construction in 1882. It is worth noting that, to this day, it is still in operation and houses its original lantern.

About a six-minute walk away is the famous Stone Bridge, an obligatory stop to take pictures of the sun's rays while bathing. The path to reach the natural stone arch starts from the Los Morrillos lighthouse and is a very popular trail for bicycle enthusiasts. Near the lighthouse is also La Playuela, commonly known as Playa Sucia (Dirty Beach). But nothing could be further from the truth, as its waters are crystal clear and it is considered one of the best beaches in Puerto Rico.
Rincón

Its name speaks for itself, and it proudly carries the title of "The town of beautiful sunsets. With more than 12 kilometers of coastline, Rincón is a paradise for water activities: surfing, diving and snorkeling, among others. Right next to Domes Beach, where surfing championships are usually held, is the Punta Higüera Lighthouse. Built in 1892, this historic lighthouse continues to guide ships navigating the Mona Passage. The park surrounding the lighthouse is a peaceful spot, perfect for a sunset picnic and, with a little luck, even a humpback whale sighting.

In addition, every Thursday night people gather and organize a small festival to enjoy the local culture and tropical atmosphere. There are also several art galleries, such as Secret Garden Art Gallery, and souvenir stores scattered throughout the municipality where you can find unique handicrafts.

Aguadilla

This beachfront retreat, located on the northwest coast of Puerto Rico, is known for having some of the best surfing spots on the island, but it offers much more than great waves... At the roadside is an observation area with panoramic views of Aguadilla Bay. Ideal both for a rest stop and to watch a spectacular sunset.

Other recommended visits are the colorful town of Cerro Cabrera, which is brimming with urban art in every corner and stands out for its macro mural "Amanecer Borincano", which pays homage to the Aguadillano fisherman. On the other hand, the Casa del Arbol (Tree House) on the Columbus Park promenade brings out the child in all of us. In addition, an abandoned airplane located on the PR-107 highway, which is said to be used as a restaurant, has become a popular tourist attraction.
San Juan

Few monuments represent Puerto Rico's colonial legacy like the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a citadel with breathtaking views from the top of Old San Juan to which the sunset gives a special color. Crossing the threshold and seeing the flag waving in the breeze of the Atlantic, it is inevitable to travel back in time... Its construction lasted 250 years, during which the castle became a six-level fortress designed to protect the island from attackers approaching by sea. In fact, this fortress has witnessed many battles over the centuries, but has never been defeated. The bastion still preserves some of the original cannons and the castle houses the oldest lighthouse on the island, built under Spanish rule in 1846. El Morro is open seven days a week and admission includes a visit to Castillo San Cristobal.

San Juan Moda

Discover Puerto Rico has partnered with San Juan Moda to make the exclusive color "Puerto Rico Sunshine" the protagonist of the event which, after its first edition in 2013, returns to its roots during this season. According to Carlos Bermudez, founder and president of the Puerto Rican runway show, this 16th edition will showcase 36 proposals from both local designers and guests from the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Mexico.

In addition, Discover Puerto Rico has also collaborated with students from the Ana G. Méndez University School of Design to create five designs inspired by the Sunshine to Spare campaign. The winning designs will be on display during "Noche de Vogue" as well as in the Ballroom of the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel from Saturday, June 4 through Friday, June 10th.
