Origen

Martinique was discovered by Christopher Columbus in1502, but it was not colonized by Spain but by France, specifically by members of the company of the American islands who settled here from 1635 to 1674 in order to colonize America. In 1674 the French government purchased the island. During the colonial wars between France and Great Britain in the 17 th and 18 th centuries, Martinique was occupied by the British on several occasions. The island was the birthplace of Josephine, wife of Napoleon. Montagne Pelée about 1 463 meters above the sea level erupted in 1902 destroying Saint-Pierre, which was once one of the largest cities of the island.

In 1946 Martinique became an overseas department of France.


Gobierno

Executive System: is made up by a Prefect who is appointed by France who is, at the same time president of the General Council. Legislative System: is made up by a General Council of forty five members and a Regional Council of forty one members, which are elected through universal suffrage for a period of six years. Martinique is represented in the French National Assembly by two senators and four deputies.Judicial System: is constituted by a Court of Appeals, tribunals of high instance and of instance.


Historia General
