Origen

Christopher Columbus was the first European who ever landed on this island, a territory he called Antigua back in 1493. Inhabited by Caribe people, this island was eventually colonized as late as 1632, when the British came to settle down. Barbuda was inhabited by people who migrated from Antigua in that same year. From 1958 to 1962 Antigua, comprising the Barbuda and Redonda dependencies, belonged to the West Indies Federation.

Rulers: Head of State (Queen Elizabeth II, represented by a Governor-general James Carlisle (since June 1993)Chief of Government: Lester Bird (replaced Vere C. Bird since February 1994) On March 9, 1989, general elections were held to renew all of the 17 seats of the unicameral parliament. The ruling Labor Party grabbed 64% of the ballots.Prime Minister Vere C. Bird formed a new government and no meaningful change ever occurred


Historia General
