Fortaleza

Fortaleza is the capital of the state of Ceará and fun-loving city featuring a historic core built by the Portuguese and the Dutch. Its weather is warm and tourism development here is superb as visitors are mostly drawn by its beaches and its bustling nightlife. It has one of the major and best-equipped networks of hotels and restaurants of the entire northeastern region. As far as sightseeing spots are concerned, the Jose de Alencar Theater -located in the square bearing the same name- whose facade of wrought-iron balconies matches with the other buildings. The Tourism Center -lodged in a former prison- houses the Museum of Popular Art and Culture, handicraft shops and box offices selling tickets for different shows. The Museum of History and Anthropology and the Museum of the Automobile are a couple of must-sees, the latter featuring a great collection of old-timed American and European cars. It's worthwhile to visit the Iracema Statue, a monument that pays tribute to the Indian woman who inspired the character in one of Jose de Alencar's novels. On the other hand, the Coco Ecological Park -opened after the steadfast protest staged by advocates of the area's environment. The Beach Park is of the latest tourist resorts made up of a nautical complex featuring aquatic toboggans and state-of-the-art leisure equipment and gear. Fortaleza has been penciled in as the "Sun's espoused blonde" due to its beaches of Meireles, Volta de Jurema and Mucuripe, intertwined by the Beira-Mar highway where rows of modern-architecture buildings, shopping malls, hotels, bars and restaurants serving the best local and international food, let alone tasty plates of shellfish, line up on both sides. Nightlife is a nonstop frenzy of sensual dancing to the beat of "forros" and sips of caipirinha and honey -the national drink- is the queen of darkness. It possesses beaches and sandy dunes, some of them wild and crowned by rugged crags, other in far-off zones and barely featuring a couple of inns to spend the night. This ambiance brings back memories of the 1970s with its unexplored beaches of unmatchable beauty.
