Punta Cana

With a streak of nonstop beaches stretching out for some 35 km, eastern Dominican Republic has riveted travelers' attention as a spot of pure sun and beach, great all-inclusive hotels that let taste the finest gourmet specialties in any of its many restaurants, practice countless of water sports and revel in a vibrant nightlife. Most of the 30 tourist resorts hedged with tropical gardens and lined up along Macao and Punta Cana beaches are suited to meet these expectations. Well-known Bavaro Beach, Gorda Beach and Cabeza de Toro are other must-sees. Near the city you'll find the East National Park and the Saona Island, a private ecological reserve in Punta Cana, the Bavaro Pond, scuba diving and fishing international centers like Cabeza de Toro, caverns with rustic paintings on their walls and underground rivers, indigenous graveyards, the Basilica of Our Lady of High Grace and its procession with the famous bulls of the Virgin, as well as the enjoyment of the saint patron festivities and the ruins of old-timed colonial mills still standing in the surroundings.

Tips

French and British rivalry over Martinique ended in 1763, when France recognized Britain's possession of Canada and withdrew its claims on Louisiana and parts of India in exchange for the island, which is now an overseas region of France.
