Evaristo Ribera Chevremont

(1896-1976 )
Puerto Rico
San Juan, 1896 One of the greatest Caribbean poets. He made several trips to Spain and made friends with different writers. He was highly praised in those circles for his poetic gifts and even published some of his works there. He rehearsed several poetic techniques that reached out to Hispanic American modernism and European surrealism. Despite his mastery of these new poetic techniques and styles –something he successfully applied in universal and abstract poems- he never stopped paying heed to form and content, nor the full-blown Caribbean poetry of the time. However, his style is sometimes vigorous and exuberant, and sometime tender and soft.Despite all that, he wrote in many traditional forms, especially sonnets he handled with mastery such as Sonnets of Sea, Love and Solitude, Death and God. His works were rich and extensive, while his poetic genius was simply incredible.
